This is the Software and Drivers section and you may download directly from this page. Be sure to read any installation notes before installing. Also note that the following Mac OS installations are updates only and the Install disc is still needed for the next major update such as advancing from Mac OS 8 to Mac OS 9.

Trying to decide what OS you want to run on your TAM?

These will greatly depend on what third party componets you have as well as memory. If you have the Sonnet G3 installed and max memory (128 MB). I'd recommend taking it to OS 9.1. If you don't have the G3 or lower memory I'd go for 8.1 or 8.6 or you could stay at 7.6.1 and keep it original.

Mac OS 7 Updates

Mac OS 7.6.1

Mac OS 7.6.1 is a maintenance release for Mac OS 7.6 users. This release corrects a variety of problems that have emerged since the initial release of Mac OS 7.6 in January. Included in this update is the CFM-68K Runtime Enabler for 68030- and 68040-based Macintosh computers. Type 11 errors have also been eliminated on PowerPC machines, as they now report the proper error message instead of the generic Type 11 error. Finally, PowerBook users will benefit from a wide variety of bug fixes and compatibility updates for PC cards and serial port use. If you are using any of the following computers you should not install this update: Macintosh Performa 4400 or a Power Macintosh 4400, 5500, 6500, 7300, 8600, or 9600 series computer. PowerBook 3400 users should click on the related link below to obtain the Mac OS 7.6.1 for PowerBook 3400s.

Mac OS 8 Updates

Mac OS 8.1 offers faster Java performance and tighter integration with Internet Explorer. However, you can still use the Web browser of your choice. Mac OS 8.1 supports the new Extended Volume Format for hard disks (also known as HFS+), an option for PowerPC users only. The Extended Volume Format optimizes the storage capacity of large hard disks by decreasing the minimum size of a single file. Existing hard disks formatted with Mac OS Standard Format, including 68K machines, will continue to function in and be supported by Mac OS 8.1. Among the many enhancements and bug fixes offered in this update, PC Exchange and Open Transport have been improved. Be sure to read the included documentation before installing.

Mac OS 8.5.1

Mac OS 8.5.1 offers improvements to Drive Setup, fixes a memory leak in AppleScript and an extended format corruption issue, reenables the use of many third-party ADB devices, and provides some improved Internet proxy firewalls for Sherlock. In addition, new Sherlock plug-ins are included.

Mac OS 8.6

Update Mac OS 8.5 or 8.5.1 to 8.6 for better system performance. Mac OS 8.6 offers improvements for Sherlock, improved media integration, greater device access and capabilities, improved printing and font mangagement, PowerBook energy efficiency, and support for Mac OS X Server. The download also includes Sherlock 2.1, LaserWriter 8.6.5, and Game Sprockets 1.1.4, among other Apple software updates.

Note: Some people have received "Error-39" messages after downloading. If you encounter this error, we suggest disabling StuffIt extensions before downloading, or using Internet Explorer's downloading utility for the download.

Mac OS 9 Updates

Mac OS 9.0.4

Mac OS 9.0.4 is the latest update for the Macintosh operating system for all computers that are compatible with Mac OS 9. It provides additional FireWire and USB support, enhances networking and power management, and improves audio, video, and graphics functionality.

Mac OS 9.1

Installing Mac OS 9.1 on a Twentieth Anniversary Macintosh with Virtual Memory turned on may result in a crash. To avoid the crash, turn off Virtual Memory and then install Mac OS 9.1.

Note: Upgrading to 9.2.1-9.2.2 requires OS 9 Helper application. Also note that the Fm Tuner and Video Player will no longer function. It is recommened to stop at 9.1 as this is the highest OS supported on the TAM. 9.2 is mostly for Classic Enviornment support. It is always a good idea to back up data before upgrading.

Drivers

Simply select the OS that you are currently running and download the nessessary files in that box. Information for the drivers is also listed. (Note 8.5 is not listed because 8.5.1 is a needed upgrade because of numerous bugs in 8.5. Also note that 8.6 requires the fewest updates and is a recommended OS for TAMs without the G3 card.) These updates should be done after you have selected an OS to run on your TAM. OS 9 downloads will be added shortly. Notes are given in the right columns and should be checked before downloading. The notes were fitted in for placement, so you'll have to look throughout the drivers section.

Drive Setup 1.7.3 - (611/99) Drive Setup installs software (called a disk driver) that allows your computer to communicate with the hard disk. Use Drive Setup 1.7.3 to update your disk driver or to reinitialize a disk. When you initialize a disk, all of its contents are erased. IMPORTANT: Earlier versios of Drive Setup can reintroduce issues resolved with Drive Setup 1.7.3. This version includes improved reliability for Ultra ATA transfers on G3 Blue and White machines.

Audio Tune Up 2.0 - (4/23/98) Audio Tune Up 2.0 fixes the following auidio problems: On Twentieth Anniversary Macintosh feedback occurs when attempting to use some applications to record audio from the internal microphone.

Video Input Update 1.0.7 - (3/5/98) The 5500/5600 Video Input UPdate is a system extension that enhances system stability on Power Macintosh 5500, 6500 and Twentieth Anniversary Macintoh Models when running video capture applications. Please refer to the Read Me file included with this software for complete details.

Apple Telecom 3.1.1 - (10/30/98)
Apple Telecom is the software that is needed to use an Apple Express Modem, GeoPort Telephone Adapter Pod, or the GeoPort Internal Comm Slot modem. Although Apple Telecom 3.1.3 has not been modified since
the release of Mac OS 7.5, it was tested for compatibility with Mac OS 8.5. Apple Telecom software continues to provide basic modem functionality for GeoPort modems. Requires Mac OS 7.6.1 - 8.5.

Appleshare Client 3.8 7/28/98) This software allows you to connect a Mac OS computer to an AppleShare file server. Computers running system software 7.6 or later should use AppleShare Client 3.8. Requires Mac OS 7.6.1 - 8.5 and OpenTranspost 1.1.2 or later.

Disk Copy 6.3.3 System 7 or later Disk Copy is a utility application that will mount disk images on your desktop, make exact copies of floppy disks from a disk image, convert disk images from one format to another, create a disk image from a mounted volume or individual folder, segment a disk image into separate files, create self-mounting disk images, and create a new blank disk image. Using DiskScripts, AppleScript, and self mounting images, it can be used to automate software installations and disk image manipulation.

Game Sprockets 1.7.5 Mac Os 8.1 or later. GameSprockets is a set of software applications that support several gaming features on your Macintosh. The GameSprockets software includes the following components:

DrawSprocket 1.7.5: Provides support for viewing game images, including setting screen resolution and color depth, choosing a monitor (on computers with multiple monitors), accelerating screen updates and delivers improvements for graphic intensive game applications.
InputSprocket 1.7.3: Provides support for a wide variety of input devices, including joysticks, gamepads, mice, and keyboards (for a complete list of Supported Devices, see below).
NetSprocket 1.7.1: Allows you to play games with other players over an AppleTalk or TCP/IP network.

Open Gl 1.2.1 Mac OS 9 Only

PCI Bridge Patch 1.0 for the Power Macintosh 6500, 5500 and Twentieth Anniversary Macintosh. This will allow the OrangeLink+ FireWire 1394+USB board to work on these systems. Simply run this patch program and it will update your system's PRAM. If you wish to remove the patch for any reason, just reset your PRAM by starting your Macintosh while holding down the Control-Option P-R keys.

Apple Video Player and FM software installers Version 1.5.4 from original disc (OS 7.6.1) This is for using the FM/TV tuner in case you loose the original files.

ATI Millions of Colors this will allow millions of colors on the TAM. Switching to thousands of colors is required for use of the TV tuner.
